My Email is Hacked it is Spamming Around for Viagra

Original Message from:

Hi! I noticed I'm getting lots of mailer daemon about failed email. When I check the content it has some thing to do with viagras on sale.
I immediately scan my computer for viruses and malware but it came up clean. I'm using outlook to send and receive emails. Last week I changed my password but until now i'm still getting loads of failure notifications with the same content.
What can I do to keep my email from being used by spammers?

  1. Sorry to hear about that. The fact is, anybody with sufficient programming knowledge can actually send emails using any email address as the sender address or the reply to address. Its really annoying if some people are using your email address to spam their product because you simply can't do anything to stop them.

This doesn't mean that they have access to your inbox. While programmers can send emails using your email address without requiring your password, they can't simply view your inbox without the required information.

  2. oh shoot! So it means sooner or later these emails are going to be blacked by spam filters right? does it also mean my emails are gonna (the ones I myself send) are going to hit the junk mail box too?

  3. There is a good chance that it will. Specially if the spammers use server cloning to make it look like the emails really come from you.

The best way you can do about this is to create a new email address. I see you have a hotmail account so you can just forward all emails from this address to your new one so you can still receive replies or emails sent to the later.

To avoid having this problem in the future you may:
    1. Avoid posting you email address in the web
    2. Avoid signing in to unreliable web sites (e.g. for subscription) if you really like to sign up for a certain website which you just encounter, it helps to check reviews about that website first (Google it)
