Non-system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready

Hi guys

I am using a HP laptop that uses windows vista basic. Now when I switch it on it gives message that says "Non-system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready".

I have the windows vista installation CD and when I use it to repair the windows using the bootrec.exe tool it does not identify any c:/ drive or whatsoever. I search it by typing " bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd" it searches and finds nothing.

Please help here and tell me whats the problem and what solutions can I apply?

Thank you
Phalo

Hi Phalo!

This error usually comes in legacy computer with floppy drives. When turn on your compute with a non system floppy drive you’ll get this.

What is the model of you hp laptop?

Regards,

Cesabarre

It's a HP530 model and it is one o0f the newer models and it did not come out with a floppy disk drive.

Do you see NTLDR missing on the error message?

if so check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812492

else, there must be a bug on its bios. Please check with HP for a BIOS update.

  1. I had the same problem with an old Compac Presario, running windows XP. I was trying to back up some photos on my newer computer, but computer was not reading the external drive. Moved to my older computer and was able to read the external, and started copying some large photo files. It seemed that the disk was getting full, and would not copy all the files “disk is full”. Used another external flash drive and completed some more until it ran out of space. Removed all USB connections properly. Noted that I had no internet virus protection on this computer, so I started to download AVAST (may not had enough disk space for the job) . Left the computer running without finalizing download and install. This morning the computer reads “ System Disk or Disk error lace and strike any key when ready” when I do that nothing happens.

Can open up “start menu F10” but I don’t know what to do.
