System Restore from Recovery Console

Restoring windows systems to previous state is useful in dealing with no boot issues with the following prompt

missing or corrupt Windows\System32\Config\System
or
missing or corrupt Windows\System32\Config\Software

in either case the computer will not be able to load the operating system. That means you have to use tools outside the operating system to resolve this issue (without having to reinstall the OS). Unlike in the current Windows 7 operating system which has a user friendly GUI for its recovery environment, in windows xp the recovery console is purely command line. So for this issue, you need to locate the copy of the system registry file which was previously backed up by system restore (provided system restore had been active prior to the occurrence of the issue). Then copy it to the above file location

1. Go to the recovery console

2. At the recovery console type in "cd c:\system~1" (without the quotes). If your system file is just corrupted but still there, you will have an access denied response. If this is your case you need to delete it first using the command "del c:\windows\system32\config\system". Then type exit and press enter to reboot back to the recovery console.

3. Once back you may now type in "cd c:\system~1\_resto~1" and press enter.

4. Type Dir and press enter to view RP folders (restore point folders) you'll see them numbered and have their corresponding dates. Find the one that you think is best. Something you recall your system was still up.

5. type in "cd RP10" (where RP10 is your choosen restore point) press enter and then type in "cd snapshot" then press enter

6. At this point your last line should look like "c:\>system~1\_resto~1\rp10\snapshot"

7. You can now copy the system file with the command "copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system"

8. You might as well replace the software registry file with the command "copy _registry_machine_SOFTWARE c:\windows\system32\config\SOFTWARE"
i typed it in allcaps so you can see the difference. confirm overwrite whenver prompted.

9. Restart your computer by typing exit and press enter. Issue should be resovled by now. Note however, that if you have malware issues you may need to resolve such issue upon logging back into your operating system to avoid repitition of this problem

  3. Hi Henry, Thank you for posting!

Do you mean you have the error missing or corrupt Windows\System32\Config\System

If this is your error message then please go ahead and proceed to choose any of your four (4) restore points.

And, you don't have to delete anything if you are able to go to c:\system~1. You only need to delete the system registry file (c:\windows\system32\config\system) if you encounter an Access Denied error when you try to change directory to c:\system~1

Cesabarre - Thanks, and what a nice site you have! Worked wonderfully, now I just have to get adload_r out of explorer and svchost.

One small suggestion - you might like to suggest that, if the process fails the first time, to return to the restore points and pick one earlier than they used the first time.

  6. It depends where these photos are stored. If you mistakenly placed it inside the system folder. There is a good possibility of loss

  8. Hello! I just have a question:
How to install recovery console xp to a different hard drive?

I have to use recovery console xp sp3 on my computer. There is a problem when it asks which directory is the windows folder located in. It gives me just an option 1.C:\WINDOWS
Actually, my 'WINDOWS' folder is located in hard drive named H:\

If I choose 1, will it delete my files on H:\ disc and create a new C:\ disk or not?
Is there an option to change the name of the drive to H:\ instead of C:\ ?

    Thanks in advance.

  12. Hello,

Windows XP will not boot up on my computer as well ALTHOUGH I am NOT receiving the error that the exact file you are talking about is missing. Not sure what is causing this as I have tried EVERY step in the Windows Recovery Console (I have XP)...

I was just wondering if I could do a system restore manually this way anyway?

I'm sure I can but I am scared because even when I try to copy ANY files on my C drive: the access is denied... i do not want to delete the system and software files and not be able re-copy it back in the systems32\config folder...

  16. Your step by step procedure seems to have resolved my problem. Only the first time I got to step 7 I entered "copy_registy_machine_system" instead of copy *spacebar* _registry_machine_system.

Thanks for your efforts to help out us XP users.
